The EPA Code of Practice for Onsite Wastewater Management (September 2008) requires all greywater treatment systems located in sewered areas to be controlled in the same way that septic tanks systems are controlled in unsewered areas.

Kernow has the experience of issuing permits under the Environment Protection Act and ensure that grey-water systems will be installed in accordance with the current Code of Practice to protect public health and reduce any environmental impacts.

Kernow understands the Permit to Install and Permit to Use requirements extensively and can deliver and effective Grey Water Management Plan for your Council.

Onsite wastewater management (septic tank systems) can be divided into three categories:

  • Septic tanks (primary treatment);
  • Treatment plants (secondary treatment); and
  • Greywater recycling in sewered areas

Permit Compliance Monitoring

Primary and secondary treatment systems require both a Permit to Install and a Permit to Use issued by the Council where the system is located.

Property owners must ensure that their septic tank systems comply with the permit conditions. Our team of experienced Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) can monitor the compliance of property owners, either as a random sample of premises, or within a specified geographical area. Kernow can provide a comprehensive Compliance Monitoring Report specifically identifying non-complying properties and any other parameters you require for measurement.

Septic Tank System Inspections

Certificates of Approval for septic tank systems generally require an inspection of a septic system every three years by an EHO or other relevant person. This condition is often incorporated into Permit to Use conditions and also into the Domestic Wastewater Management Plan (DWMP) and is, in many municipalities, governed by local law. Kernow can handle the burden of these provisions for your Council.

Domestic Wastewater Management Plans (DWMP)

Kernow has developed numerous DWMP's, strategies and policies.  If you are looking for assistance in drafting a suitable DWMP and other relevant wastewater policies, let Kernow share our knowledge and expertise.

Locating septic tanks and treatment plants in your municipality

Using the latest GPS locating equipment, Kernow can locate septic tanks on individual blocks and accurately record the exact location of the septic tank. This information can then be used as an overlay on your GIS mapping software. This service can be incorporated into Permit Compliance Monitoring, inspection and report, or as a “stand alone” service. This service can fill the gaps or provide complete coverage for your DWMP.
